Benefits of Balsam Fir essential oil for dog moms - calming/balancing emotions, muscle ache relief, and easy breathing. Learn how I use it at home for myself and my dogs.

Christmas decorations go up in the stores right as the Halloween decorations are being put on clearance. Thanksgiving gets no love – maybe a couple of shelves in an aisle. The first person to put up Christmas lights joined in on the fun, lighting up their corner of the block the weekend after Halloween.

Fun!

As I'm typing, I have a sarcastic tone in my voice in my head, but I'll be honest and say that I love Christmas. This is the one time of the year when we mostly see the best in people. Okay, so Black Friday aside, it's fun to see excited kids, I love holiday decorations, and it's fun shopping for friends and family. When I was a kid, I used to sit and stare at the Christmas tree lights, with the presents wrapped beneath, it was the prettiest thing in the world.

I still have warm thoughts about Christmas. And as much as I'd like to replicate those family feelings in our house, I can't because I live with five obnoxious dogs and a bossy cat. I don't trust any of them around a Christmas tree.

  • Rodrigo would pee on it every day.
  • Scout and Apollo would knock it down during play.
  • Sydney would destroy the presents.

After coming down to check out the new addition to our home, the tree, Cosmo would end up climbing into the tree to escape the dogs. And while all this chaos is happening, Zoey would be barking her head off.

It doesn't have that same nostalgic feel of the Christmas of my youth. So instead of having a tree, I diffuse essential oils.

What is Balsam Fir?

According to the internet, balsam firs are native to eastern and central Canada and can be found in the northeastern states of the US. Balsam Firs are considered the most fragrant of all of the Christmas trees.

Living on a property surrounded by pine trees, I thought Balsam Fir essential oil would smell like our property – but it doesn't. Balsam Fir is a light scent compared to other “fir” essential oils, and I love it. It reminds me of how we smell after trimming the trees on our property, adding a bit of Christmas to the house.

Benefits of Balsam Fir Essential Oil

Calming / Balancing Emotions

I use Balsam Fir essential oil for calming benefits. Many essential oils do a great job of relaxing everyone (including pets) in our home when I diffuse them at home. I have three diffusers going at once (big area), and it only takes a few drops of essential oil to fill our house with the smell of Christmas.

Ease Breathing

If you suffer from a cold or allergies, congestion comes to the party, and Balsam Fir essential oil can help clear your sinus and improve your breathing. You can diffuse it in the room or 6-15 drops (adjust as you need) with a carrier oil in a roller to massage your chest.

Stop Procrastinating

I've found that diffusing Balsam Fir essential oil helps to relax and focus my mind. I diffuse it in the room I'm working or put the diluted oil behind my ears, neck, and collar bones. Keeping the scent with me all day.

Or I add it to an essential oil necklace (diffuser locket). Fashion, nice scent, and focus!

Essential Oils that Mix Well with Balsam Fir

How Many Drops of Balsam Fir?

When diffusing the Balsam Fir essential oil, I add about 4-5 drops in the home office, family room, and living room areas. Anything more is overpowering and too much for the dogs.

When diluting Balsam Fir, I add between 6-15 drops of essential oil. And when I add it to a diffuser locket, I add 2-3 drops.

Is Balsam Fir Safe to Use with Dogs?

Before using any essential oil on or around my dogs, I check the Animal Desk Reference manual on essential oils for animals by Dr. Melissa Shelton.

Balsam Fir essential oil is safe for use around dogs. By diluting this essential oil with a carrier oil, Balsam Fir can be massaged into sore muscles after a heavy workout.
