Natural meal toppers serve to improve a dog's meal, no matter the diet, by tempting picky eaters and reducing the risk of nutritional deficiencies.

It was an exciting day when I was introduced to FUNctional Toppers by Northwest Naturals, freeze-dried meal toppers that can be sprinkled or spooned over a dog's meal (raw or kibble) to add extra flavor. The ingredients in these toppers are sustainably sourced and are wheat, soy, and corn-free, with no additives, fillers, artificial preservatives, or dyes. Typically, meal toppers are sold to us as flavor enhancers to make mealtime fun for our dogs, but these food toppers come with several more benefits you may not consider.

Benefits of FUNctional Meal Toppers

FUNctional meal toppers come in a variety of flavors, textures, and aromas that can make a dog's meals more appealing. Adding a topper can entice picky eaters, encouraging them to eat their food. By incorporating different toppers, dog owners can provide their pets with a broader range of nutrients, ensuring a more balanced diet and reducing the risk of nutritional deficiencies.

I began adding FUNctional meal toppers to my dogs' meals to add flavor, as expected, but also because they come with additional benefits traditional meal toppers may not offer.

1 – Beef Blood

Beef blood, also known as blood sausage or black pudding, contains some nutritional benefits. It is a source of high-quality protein, iron, and vitamin B12. Iron is essential for oxygen transport, while vitamin B12 is crucial for red blood cell production and nervous system function.

Although beef blood is high in cholesterol, the amount in a meal topper isn't enough to lead to health issues. However, if you have concerns, speak with your veterinarian.

2 – Goat's Milk

Due to its nutritional composition, goat's milk is very beneficial to dogs. It is easier to digest than cow's milk, making it suitable for dogs with sensitive stomachs or lactose intolerance. Goat's milk is rich in vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids, supporting a healthy immune system, skin, and coat. It also contains probiotics, enzymes, and beneficial bacteria that promote digestive health.

3 – Chicken Egg

Chicken eggs are an excellent source of high-quality protein, containing all the essential amino acids that dogs need. Eggs are also rich in vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and B-complex. They provide minerals like iron, selenium, and calcium, essential for a dog's overall health.

Additionally, eggs contain healthy fats that contribute to a shiny coat and support brain function. Feeding eggs to dogs can help improve muscle development, boost energy levels, and support a robust immune system.

4 – Salmon, Shiitake, and Maitake Mushrooms

Salmon is a nutrient-rich fish that is a fantastic source of high-quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential minerals like potassium and selenium. Omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA and DHA, have anti-inflammatory properties, supporting joint health, brain function, and a healthy coat. Additionally, salmon provides vitamins B12 and D, contributing to a strong immune system and bone health.

Shiitake mushrooms are a great source of essential minerals like copper, selenium, and zinc. Shiitake mushrooms also contain vitamins B2, B3, and B5, which support energy production and a healthy metabolism. Moreover, they contain polysaccharides and other compounds believed to have immune-boosting and anti-cancer properties.

Maitake mushrooms are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals such as potassium, copper, and vitamins B2 and D. Maitake mushrooms also contain beta-glucans, which have immune-enhancing properties and support cardiovascular health.

5 – Beef Liver & Turmeric

Beef liver is a nutrient-dense organ meat that is a rich source of high-quality protein, vitamins A, B, and iron. The liver also contains essential fatty acids and amino acids that support a dog's overall health, including skin and coat condition. Moderately feeding beef liver can be beneficial, but it's important to avoid excessive consumption due to its high vitamin A content.

Turmeric is a spice that contains an active compound called curcumin, which possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Turmeric helps reduce inflammation, support joint health, aid digestion, and boost the immune system in dogs.

6 – Chicken Breast & New Zealand Green Lipped Mussels

Chicken breast is a lean and highly digestible protein source for dogs. It provides essential amino acids, promoting muscle development and maintaining healthy skin and coat. Chicken breast is low in fat and calories, making it suitable for dogs on a weight management diet. It is also a good source of vitamins B6 and B12, niacin, and selenium, which support energy production and immune function.

Green-lipped mussels are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, and chondroitin sulfate, which support joint health and mobility. Green-lipped mussels also contain antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that can contribute to a strong immune system and overall well-being in dogs. Adding green-lipped mussels to a dog's diet or using them as a supplement helps alleviate joint inflammation and promote joint health.

7 – Veggie & Fruit

Vegetables and fruits offer numerous benefits to dogs as they are packed with essential nutrients. They provide a source of dietary fiber that aids digestion and helps maintain a healthy weight. Many vegetables and fruits are rich in vitamins A, C, and E, which support immune function and promote a healthy coat. They also contain antioxidants that contribute to a dog's overall health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Using FUNctional Meal Toppers

Northwest Naturals' FUNctional meal toppers are an excellent addition to a dog's diet, no matter what you feed. They add additional nutrients to the diet and tempt a picky eater while adding variety to the diet. Toppers may hide the taste or smell of medication added to a meal. And they can add volume to the meal without the added calories.

It's important to note that meal toppers are created to complement a diet, not “balance” a diet.
