There are a lot of subscription boxes available for dog lovers, but which one is the best for raw fed dogs? The answer is easy; the best is Real Dog Box, but I'm biased as I've been a customer for years (and the owners are my friends).
Benefits of a Dog Subscription Box
Subscribing to a dog subscription box offers many advantages for dog lovers, including the convenience of having curated products delivered to your door, eliminating the need for frequent trips to the pet store, and possibly saving you money along the way. These services introduce pet parents to new dog treats and pet products.
However, many of the subscription box services have been disappointing. The toys can't stand up to tough chewers, and the dog treats contain questionable ingredients. Although many subscription boxes prioritize quality and health, it's important to get a good idea of what will be in your boxes. In my experience, many were a waste of money because I rarely kept the items in the box.
Of course, I could give the box to friends, but that's not why I subscribed.
Choosing a Dog Subscription Box
When selecting the ideal subscription box for your dog(s), several factors should be considered to ensure you make the best choice. Firstly, consider your dog's size and breed. Different subscription boxes cater to various sizes, from small breeds like Chihuahuas to larger breeds like Great Danes. A box designed for smaller dogs may contain treats or toys unsuitable for a larger dog, so it's crucial to ensure that the box you choose offers items appropriate for your dog’s size (and chewing/playing style) to maximize enjoyment and safety.
Another critical factor is your dog’s specific needs and preferences. Does your dog have any allergies or dietary restrictions? Some subscription services allow you to customize the contents of the box based on your dog’s preferences, ensuring that you receive products that are not only enjoyable but also safe. Additionally, consider your dog’s activity level and personality. Active dogs may benefit from interactive toys that challenge them mentally and physically, while more laid-back pups might appreciate cozy beds or chew toys. Tailoring the subscription box to your dog’s unique lifestyle can significantly enhance their happiness and engagement.
Finally, pricing and subscription flexibility are essential to consider. Subscription boxes can vary widely in cost, and it’s crucial to find one that fits your budget without compromising quality. Look for options that provide various subscription lengths, from monthly to quarterly, allowing you to adjust based on your needs and financial situation. Some services even offer trials or discounts for first-time subscribers, making it easier to test the waters without a long-term commitment.
Popular Dog Subscription Box Options
Bark Box
The market for dog subscription boxes has expanded significantly, offering a range of options to suit various preferences and needs. One of the most popular choices is BarkBox. Tailored for dogs of all sizes, BarkBox delivers a monthly selection of toys, treats, and chews based on your dog's size and preferences. The themes change each month, adding an element of surprise and excitement. BarkBox is well-known for its high-quality products and engaging toys that keep dogs entertained for hours, making it a favorite among pet owners.
PupBox
Another notable contender in the subscription box arena is PupBox. This service is unique because it caters to puppies, providing age-specific products designed to help with training and development. Each box includes training guides, toys, and treats that change as your puppy grows. This thoughtful approach makes PupBox an excellent choice for new dog owners looking to provide the best start for their young companions. The focus on training and developmental resources sets it apart from other options, ensuring that the owner and the puppy can benefit from the subscription.
Real Dog Box
Real Dog Box stands out as a premium subscription service that prioritizes a dog's health and happiness. They offer a personalized experience by curating boxes based on your dog's size, age, and dietary preferences. Each box contains a carefully selected mix of natural, single-ingredient treats from various proteins, seafood, organ meat, and light to heavy chews. Real Dog Box offers additional products and services, making it an excellent option for raw feeders and anyone interested in elevating their dog's diet. Natural air-dried meatballs that can fed as a meal when you forget to thaw dog food, monthly nutrition consultations, and a Secret Shop to purchase additional treats and chews.
Cost and Value of Dog Subscription Boxes
When considering a dog subscription box, understanding the pricing structure and the overall value for money is essential. Subscription boxes can range from budget-friendly options to premium packages, so it’s essential to assess what you are getting for the price you pay. Most boxes offer a selection of toys, treats, and other products, but the quality and quantity can vary significantly. A well-priced box should provide items that are of high quality, ensuring that your dog receives products that are safe and enjoyable.
In evaluating value for money, consider the cost of purchasing similar items individually. Subscription boxes often provide a cost-effective way to access a variety of products at a lower overall price than buying each item separately. This is particularly true for high-quality, artisanal treats or unique toys that may be more expensive when purchased through traditional retail channels.
Additionally, keep an eye out for promotions and trial offers. Many subscription services provide introductory offers for first-time subscribers, allowing you to test the waters without a long-term commitment. This can be an excellent way to gauge whether the box meets your expectations in terms of value and quality.
Why I Subscribed to Real Dog Box
I've subscribed to several subscription services and was disappointed by what I received in the box. As I stated above, I didn't like the ingredients in the dog treats, and the toys weren't a good fit for my dogs. And, the subscriptions were too expensive – I didn't get enough for a multi-dog home (unless I paid for more boxes), and what I did, I didn't keep. So, I was throwing money away.
With Real Dog Box, I had three options:
- Treats Only Box
- Chews Only Box
- Treats & Chews Box
Real Dog Box offers three add-ons: meatballs, a super chew, and food toppers. Dog owners can also customize their boxes to account for food sensitivities.
I selected the Treats and Chews Box for a single-dog home, and the monthly subscription arrives with enough for a multi-dog home. I pause my subscription occasionally because I haven't gone through the past two boxes yet. The Secret Shop is the only place I can get certain items at an affordable price, like bulk rabbit ears, air-dried meatballs, and ground green-lipped mussels.
And, finally, Real Dog Box makes it easy to update, pause, or cancel their service if it's not a good fit.
Real Dog Box Wellness Membership
And, when dog owners sign up for the Wellness Membership, they receive a monthly one-on-one nutrition consult with a Wellness Coach, unlimited access to Certified Canine Nutritionists, early access to the Secret Shop, and free access to Feed Real Institute research and tools. This is an excellent option for dog owners interested in canine nutrition, feeding a fresh food diet, and DIY raw feeding.
What Was In Our Last Real Dog Box?
Our December 2024 Real Dog Box contained the following air-dried treats and chews:
- PROTEIN: bison lung – high in protein, iron, B12, and selenium
- ORGAN: pork liver – an excellent source of Vitamins A and B12, iron, copper, and zinc
- SEAFOOD: capelin – small fish from the smelt family that's low in mercury, rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, and a great meal topper
- LIGHT CHEW: lamb ear, with fur – an easy chew for gentle chewers; the fur is an excellent source of fiber and manganese
- MEDIUM CHEW: duck heads – fully consumable and a great option for low or no-bone meals
- HEAVY CHEW: cow ear, with fur that can be long-lasting for some heavy chewers (but not all)
Each item in a Real Dog Box arrives in a package with multiple treats and chews, and there's something for each of my dogs. If I were to buy each item individually, it would cost at least $75. For less money per month, I receive a variety of treats and chews that Real Dog Box sources and air-dries in-house.
Alternatives to Real Dog Box
While dog subscription boxes can provide an option to give your dog superior products at a slightly lower price, an alternative that will allow you to treat your dog while saving money is to create a customized gift basket filled with your dog's favorite treats and toys. You can handpick items based on your dog's preferences and dietary restrictions, ensuring they receive exactly what they love. You can curate a basket for special occasions like birthdays or holidays, adding a personal touch that subscription boxes may not offer.
I've found affordable, quality dog toys at Marshalls, HomeGoods, and TJ Maxx. I make dehydrated dog treats using proteins, organ meat, and seafood I purchased from outlet and ethnic grocery stores. I've picked up free meat from local homesteaders and freezer dumps.
