Cathy and I chat about our keeping the weight off of our dogs, the importance of pet insurance, and this trend of dogs with cicadas in their mouths. Oh and we went took a left turn into pet safe air purifiers, candles, and essential oils.
Helping Our Dogs Lose Weight
Sydney was my sweet sweet girl, she was my doppelganger, and I loved her so much. She was also fat for several years and it took other people commenting on her weight for me to do something about it. I tried reducing her meals and adding green beans and although she dropped a few pounds, it wasn't enough.
A fellow content creator and raw feeder (who is also a dog trainer, certified nutritionist, and more) threw me a bone several years ago and gave me advice on how to get those stubborn pounds to drop away. Sydney had mobility issues, which is why she couldn't exercise and I learned a way to keep her joints safe by taking it easy. We started by walking at her pace for 15 minutes a day and slowly built up her stamina and mobility and we eventually made it to two laps around our property (5 acres).
Zoey struggles with weight as well. She's not a runner or walker, she's more of a hunter (which isn't as taxing), so I have to walk her daily to keep the weight off. Our boys are running all over, even 11-1/2-year-old Rodrigo.
Pet Insurance
It shocks me when I learn that someone didn't get pet insurance for their dog. It is an investment and not everyone can fit pet insurance in their budget, but if you can, do it because you don't want to end up with a cancer diagnosis ($10,000 for Scout). And if you're reading this and telling yourself that you can put the money in a savings account instead, you're right and this will work as long as your dog doesn't get sick for many years. But what if you receive a cancer diagnosis two months after opening the savings account?
I'm thankful that we have pet insurance because…
- I don't have to worry about money when I'm already worrying about my dog.
- Pet insurance takes away a level of stress.
- The right companies are amazing (I use Embrace for 3 dogs and Trupanion for Rodrigo).
- I don't have to choose finances over my dog.
- Our pet insurance covers many things.
Can Dogs Eat Cicadas?
Well, of course, dogs can eat cicadas, but is it safe?
A quick Google search taught me that dogs can eat cicadas and one or two won't harm them, but if a dog dines out like a starving dog at a cicada buffet, then they might get sick (vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite) because the exoskeleton is difficult to digest.
