There is a growing number of brands that produce CBD oil and hemp seed oil and, at first, I thought they were interchangeable. I thought “hemp” was another term for “CBD.” I was wrong.
Hemp seed oil and CBD oil don't have psychoactive effects like marijuana. Hemp and CBD are derived from the same plant. However, there are some differences that must be noted because the marketing of these products can be confusing and I'm writing this post to shed some light while keeping you from spending money on something that may not work for your dog.
Hemp Seed Oil vs. CBD Oil
Hemp seed oil and CBD oil come from different parts of the same plant. Hemp seed oil is produced by pressing hemp seeds while CBD oil is extracted from the hemp flowers. In the case of full spectrum CBD oil, the whole plant is used to produce the oil. They both have benefits that will help our dogs (and ourselves) so it isn't necessary to choose one over the other. However, some brands are promoting their hemp seed oil products as if they offer the same benefits as CBD oil, which I don't think is accurate based on personal experience with my dogs.
Benefits of CBD Oil
CBD oil is primarily used for medicinal purposes. I use it to reduce anxiety in my dogs, as an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever, and I've seen it used to treat seizures. While you can add CBD oil to food, I have found that you get faster, more effective results when you rub it into your dog's paw pads or put it directly on their tongue or inside of their cheek, allowing it to absorb quickly into their system.
As I understand it, when you add it to a dog's food, the CBD oil has to go through the digestive system before being able to get to work, and by then, we're seeing reduced effectiveness. This is why I don't buy CBD dog treats; I prefer the oil for my crew.

Benefits of Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp seed oil is often used as a food supplement, and it is high in essential fatty acids (Omega 3s and Omega 6s), which makes it great for joint health, brain health, skin and coat health, supports a healthy nervous system, boosts the immune system, and it lowers cholesterol.
I have used hemp seed oil as an alternative to fish oil for my dogs. However, before you follow my lead, keep in mind that the essential fatty acid in hemp seed oil is ALA (α-linolenic acid) and dogs have limited ability to convert ALA to DHA and EPA, which is what they need. By the time the conversion happens, the hemp seed oil isn't as effective, so I recommend one that is a hemp seed oil/fish oil combination.

I often see people claim that hemp seed oil can be used to help with joint pain while I don't doubt the positive experiences that others have had, I wonder if they're doing anything additional while giving their dog hemp seed oil. While hemp seed oil does support joint health because the essential fatty acids act as an anti-inflammatory, I think that it takes time to build up to that effect. I believe that people who want to provide immediate relief for their dogs are better off using CBD oil.
I have also seen people claim that hemp seed oil is excellent for dogs with anxiety; I have had great success with CBD oil, but I haven't tried hemp seed oil for anxiety. The one product I tried was purchased for nutritional benefits and not anxiety so I didn't notice if there was a difference between Rodrigo or Zoey.
Choosing a Quality Product
I don't know a lot about CBD oil, hemp seed oil, and hemp seeds – I'm not an expert. What I do know is what works for my dogs and what doesn't. I have two dogs that developed arthritis early in life. Rodrigo has joint issues in his front left leg. Sydney has joint pain in her hips and rear right leg (due to a partial cruciate tear). When my dogs are in pain, I want to provide them with relief immediately, not a few weeks down the line, so I've taken a crash course in what works and what doesn't work and found a company that I trust by just calling and speaking with each brand.
There are going to be a lot of CBD and hemp seed oil products coming to the market, and it's important to ask the following questions:
- Is the CBD oil full spectrum (are they using the whole plant)? If not, why not?
- Is the CBD oil GMO-free,pesticide-free, and organic?
- Is the company practicing sustainable practices that are better for the environment?
- Are the oils tested by a reputable third party lab?
The reason I buy my dogs' CBD oil from IrieCBD and Natural Pet Organics is that not only is the answer “yes” to all of the above questions; they also give back to the community to make sure that everyone can afford CBD oil and not just the wealthy. For each of my purchases, I make it possible for someone else to be able to afford this amazing product for themselves, a family member, or a pet.
Isn't CBD Oil Expensive?
The more prevalent and excepted CBD oil and the benefits are becoming, the lower the price will be, however, it can be an investment for some. In the past, I've purchased 8-10 bottles of CBD oil on Black Friday weekend, and this lasts for nearly a year.
I have found that ordering online is a lot more affordable than buying at a retail outlet. At the time of this blog post, Natural Pet Organics is offering their CBD oil for $37 for a 250 mg bottle. I combine the CBD oil with a species appropriate diet, which causes less inflammation, and, together, they provide pain relief. For anxiety relief, Rodrigo and Zoey usually do well on one dropper full of CBD oil; on the Fourth of July, I up that to two droppers full.
In the time that I've been using CBD oil with my dogs, I've found that it's more affordable than prescription medication, it's effective, and it's natural with no side effects.
