A reader emailed me recently to ask me about how much it costs to feed my dogs raw and that inspired me to record a video for Random Question Wednesday, a feature on my YouTube channel. While I was recording the video, I was reminded of someone who spends $100 feeding raw to 9 big dogs. I spend between $200-$250 a month.
So, I'm going doing more DIY and reducing the amount of premade raw that I buy for my dogs. In the below recipe, I feed my dogs a duck grind with pureed vegetables, pork uterus, and a raw egg.
Duck grind
Duck is a protein that all of my dogs can eat and I can source at a good price. I usually buy duck wings, duck necks, and duck frames. This duck grind is made by a local company and the last that I'll be purchasing as I work to reduce my raw feeding budget. The grind includes various vegetables.
DIY Duck Grind
When making a duck grind, I use the following ingredients:
- 20 lbs of duck wings (my order comes in 20-pound boxes)
- 6 lbs of beef organ blend from GreenTripe.com
- 4-6 lbs of fermented vegetables or pureed vegetables
Pork uterus
My dogs tried pork uterus initially when Raw Feeding Miami sent a large shipment of raw goodies in 2018. The dogs loved the uterus and I looked at my co-op's orders to see if I could source it locally and I can. The pork uterus comes in a huge box, frozen together. I used warmed water to help break it up without fully thawing it out, ground the uterus, and put it back in the freezer in smaller packages.
Uterus is treated as a muscle meat in the raw food diet, not offal. I looked online for the nutrient profile of uterus (what's the point of feeding uterus, anyway?) and it wasn't easy to find what I needed…
Nutritional Benefits of Pork Uterus
Although pork uterus contains many vitamins and minerals, it's not very high in anything except protein and Vitamin B-3, so it will never be the main protein in my dogs' diet, but I'll definitely add it to the diet.
Raw Eggs
I treat raw eggs as a multivitamin because of all of the nutrients they bring to the table. What I find cool about eggs is that you can add them raw or cooked and the nutrients don't change much. I add raw eggs to my dogs' dishes at least 4 days a week now.
Easy Raw Dog Food Recipe
- 10 lbs of premade duck grind
- 2 lbs of pork uterus
- 1 raw egg per dog
Supplements for DIY Raw Feeding
You can see the supplements I add to my dogs' meals (and why) by visiting my Supplements Page. I try to supplement my dogs' diet with whole foods when possible because I believe that they are easier to digest and the nutrients are more bioavailable. However, fresh food isn't always possible and in that case, I use powders to meet various needs.
