Do you have an anxious dog? A dog with joint issues or other inflammation? Or a dog that has tummy issues? Did you know the herb chamomile may be able to help?

I began adding chamomile to my dogs' meals to help them relax and calm down at the end of the day. Little did I know that it was helping in other ways too.

Do you add herbs to your dogs' diet?

Chamomile is a widely known herbal medicine utilized since ancient times by the Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks for its evident medical properties. Today, chamomile is commonly used as a mild sedative and an antispasmodic. It relaxes muscles, is rich in antioxidants, reduces anxiety, has anti-inflammatory properties, and can even be a sleep aid. Overall, it is a powerful solution to remediate many human health conditions. However, did you know that chamomile is also recommended for dogs?

I was recently introduced to a business that offers herbal remedies for dogs. One of their products is chamomile. I drink chamomile tea all the time; it calms my nerves and helps me relax after a long day. I never thought that my dogs could benefit from it, either.

Benefits of Chamomile for Dogs

  • Chamomile may calm anxious dogs.
  • Chamomile relieves a dog's itchy, irritated skin.
  • Chamomile eases tummy upset.

Chamomile Calms Anxious Dogs

Chamomile is becoming an increasingly popular natural remedy for calming anxious dogs. It has a potent anti-anxiety effect on both people and dogs. It contains chemicals that soothe muscles, decrease blood pressure, and reduce anxiousness. If your dog has chronic anxiety or panics frequently, you can also pair chamomile with other herbs, such as valerian, to help them more.

Relieves Itchiness and Skin Inflammation

Curious dogs love to explore outside and likely get itchiness or skin irritations more than the average pup from something they get into. Chamomile reduces swelling, but that is not all it has. Chamomile also contains anti-microbial properties, which effectively heal skin infections and itchiness. This will get your dog feeling better in no time.

Ease Gastrointestinal Issues

If you're a pet parent, you know our dogs occasionally have tummy issues. Giving your dog chamomile, a wonderful antispasmodic, can help relax their stomach and bowel muscles to reduce gas and pains. Something to remember is that this may help them feel better; chamomile should not be used to try and treat GI disorders. If you feel like your dog is having a hard time, don't hesitate to get them checked out for a proper diagnosis.

Buying Chamomille for Your Dog

Don't run to your local grocery store and stock up on chamomile tea; that's not what you want. I love tea, and we have over ten types in our kitchen. I drink tea daily. However, when I stock up on tea because it's on sale, I'm probably not buying the highest quality tea. By the way, herbal tea isn't tea because it's a combination of herbs, not tea leaves.

That being said, when looking for herbs for my dogs, I'm going to source the highest quality, and I prefer to buy from a company that formulates herbs (and herbal mixes) for pets; that way, I know that I'm giving the correct dosage and not guessing. So, I buy herbs for my dogs from Kairos for Dogs.

Should We Add Chamomile to Our Dogs' Diet?

I say, “Yes!” My dogs benefit significantly from taking chamomile. I primarily add it to my dogs' diet to help them relax at the end of the day and to ease upset tummies, but in my research, I've learned that there are more benefits. As always, I wouldn't recommend using chamomile instead of veterinarian care, and I always recommend talking to your vet about any negative medicine interactions or possible sensitivities.
