Meet Duke, the Golden Retriever Who Steals Everything From Car Keys to Fine China

If you have ever lost your keys and blamed it on forgetfulness, imagine living with a dog who is actually the culprit. Duke, a 10-year-old rescued golden retriever, has built quite the reputation as a household thief, and his owner Cathy Hoyt has been documenting his sticky-pawed adventures on Instagram under the handle @lifewithduke2025. Followers tune in daily just to see what this lovable rascal has managed to swipe, and the list keeps growing. What started as quirky behavior has turned into a full-blown internet obsession.

Duke’s taste in stolen goods is nothing short of eclectic. He has made off with fine porcelain dishes, teapots, sugar bowls, ceramic bells, books, magazines, and even framed pictures off the wall. Hoyt says the strangest item he ever dragged into his bed was a teddy bear-shaped lamp from her son’s old nursery, which he apparently felt deserved a new home. He has also claimed a large food bowl, a framed poster, and a portable cooler as his own personal treasures.

His most recent heist, however, really got people talking. Hoyt filmed herself discovering that Duke had gone digging through her purse and pulled out her car keys. “Oh my God, he got my car keys out of my purse. That’s something new,” she said in the video, showing Duke standing there with the keys dangling from his mouth. “He didn’t take the whole purse, just the keys,” she added. Commenters on the post could not help but jump to Duke’s defense, with one fan joking that it would be terrible if she had errands to run.

Hoyt was actually warned about Duke’s kleptomaniac tendencies before she ever brought him home, and she adopted him anyway. He is the fourth senior dog she has welcomed through Southeastern Virginia Golden Retriever Rescue & Training, an organization she clearly has a deep bond with. The family fell for him despite knowing his quirks, deciding to give him a shot at a stable life. Within days of settling in, Duke had already claimed Hoyt’s glasses as his first trophy.

The behavior, while undeniably funny, likely has roots in something far more emotional. According to People, Duke came from an unstable background, having experienced family separation and the loss of the woman he lived with afterward. He was then surrendered again due to resource guarding issues before eventually landing with a foster family and then with Hoyt. Experts and his owner alike believe his collecting habit is his way of marking his space and reassuring himself that he is truly home this time. There is something genuinely moving about a dog who expresses security through a stolen porcelain teapot.

Hoyt never planned on building a following around Duke’s antics. She originally started his Instagram to share updates with family and friends, and began filming his behavior specifically to show her vet how unusual it was. What grew from that is a warm, supportive community that shares stories, health advice, and genuine affection for this senior pup. “There are days when I honestly don’t know how to thank the community that has formed,” Hoyt has shared, saying she loves every one of them. Duke may be a thief, but he has somehow managed to steal the hearts of thousands along the way.
