This Man Snuck Onto the Deadly Snake Island Where Humans Are Forbidden to Visit
There are adventurous people in the world, and then there is Miles Routledge, better known online as Lord Miles. The self-described “danger tourist” has made a name for himself by visiting some of the most hostile and off-limits places on the planet. His latest stunt, however, might just be his most reckless yet. He sneaked his way onto Ilha da Queimada Grande, a small island off the coast of São Paulo, Brazil, that is strictly off-limits to the public.
The island is more commonly known as Snake Island, and the name alone should tell you everything you need to know. Spanning roughly 106 acres, it is home to an estimated 4,000 snakes, many of which belong to one of the most venomous species on Earth. The Golden lancehead, a member of the pit viper family, is the island’s most notorious resident. A bite from one of these creatures can kill an average person within an hour, which makes the island almost impossible to survive without immediate medical attention.
Visiting Snake Island is completely banned for ordinary people, with the only exceptions being researchers and scientists who obtain special permission. The Brazilian coast guard actively patrols the surrounding waters to keep people away from the island. Getting there requires more than just bravery, it requires stealth. Lord Miles and his team had to carefully dodge those coast guard patrols just to make landfall.
Once ashore, Miles did not waste any time getting into the thick of it. He set his sights on an abandoned lighthouse sitting deeper into the island, which he described as one of the most dangerous spots in the area. Locals have long claimed that the people who once lived inside that lighthouse met their end through snake bites. Before heading into the overgrown terrain, Miles put on some rather unconventional protective gear, opting for medieval-inspired armor to guard himself against potential strikes. He also paused to say a prayer before setting off, which honestly seems like a reasonable thing to do under the circumstances.
Speaking directly to the camera at one point, Miles said “This isn’t clickbait, I’m on one of the most dangerous islands in the world,” before adding that “Many have been to this island and very few have gotten out unfortunately.” Those words carry a lot of weight when you consider the density of venomous wildlife surrounding him at every step. His trek to the lighthouse took him through thick grass and dense vegetation, exactly the kind of environment where a hidden snake would be nearly impossible to spot.
In a twist that surprised even the most cautious viewers, Miles actually encountered very few snakes during his time on the island. The bigger threat seemed to be dehydration rather than fangs, given the physical demands of navigating through that kind of terrain under heat. He even remarked with a dry sort of calm that it was “not that bad, for the second most dangerous island in the world.” Whether that was genuine relief or just bravado for the camera, it is hard to say.
Against most reasonable expectations, Lord Miles made it off Snake Island alive, completing one of the more absurd YouTube adventures anyone has attempted in recent memory. His footage gave viewers a rare and genuinely eerie look at a place that almost no human being has ever been permitted to see up close. It is the kind of content that is equal parts fascinating and deeply unsettling to watch. Most people will never set foot anywhere near that island, and honestly, that is probably for the best.
