Jet2 Flight Diverts to Portugal After Pilot Suffers Suspected Heart Attack Mid-Air
A Jet2 flight carrying up to 220 passengers made a dramatic unplanned landing in Porto, Portugal, after the pilot reportedly suffered a suspected heart attack while cruising at 30,000 feet. The flight, LS1266, had been heading from Tenerife to Birmingham when the emergency unfolded mid-journey. Passengers described the atmosphere on board turning to pure chaos in a matter of moments, with cabin crew visibly distressed and rushing down the aisle. It was the kind of scene that no traveler ever wants to find themselves in.
Those on board said they quickly realized something was seriously wrong when flight attendants, reportedly in tears, began asking if anyone had medical training. One passenger shared that they had been asleep alongside their partner when they were suddenly woken by the commotion around them. Their two-year-old child started crying, as did many other young children on the flight, largely due to how rapidly the plane began losing altitude as it headed toward an emergency descent. The sheer speed of the drop made it immediately clear that this was no ordinary situation.
With the pilot incapacitated, the aircraft’s first officer took control of the plane and safely brought it down to Porto’s Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport. Emergency services were filmed rushing to the runway as the twin-jet Airbus A321 touched down. Medical staff boarded the plane and attended to the pilot directly in the cockpit before he was transported to the hospital. The first officer’s ability to handle the aircraft and land it safely almost certainly made all the difference in that moment.
The ordeal did not end once the plane was on the ground. Passengers found themselves stranded at the Portuguese airport for around 13 hours while waiting for a new cockpit crew to be arranged so they could continue on to the UK. One traveler said they were not even allowed off the aircraft for the first hour after landing. After that, they described simply wandering around the terminal with no accommodation provided, with the airline reportedly citing the cost of hotels as the reason no lodging was arranged for them.
Despite the understandable frustration felt by those stuck in limbo, many passengers made a point of expressing genuine sympathy for the pilot. They had been told he suffered a heart attack in the cockpit, and however difficult their wait was, the human element of the situation was not lost on them. Jet2 later offered all affected passengers a free change onto any Jet2 flight to a UK destination within the following week as a gesture of goodwill. A spokesperson for the airline confirmed the diversion and stated that at no point was the safety of those on board compromised.
It is worth remembering that moments like this, however terrifying they feel in the moment, are a reminder of just how rigorous aviation safety protocols really are. Commercial flights operate with at least two qualified pilots precisely because emergencies like this do occasionally happen. The first officer on Flight LS1266 performed exactly as trained, and every passenger arrived safely on the ground. The pilot’s condition following his hospitalization has not been publicly confirmed, but the focus from everyone on board seemed to be as much on hoping for his recovery as it was on the disruption they experienced.
