A Flight Attendant Reveals the Clothing She Would Never Wear on a Plane

Most travelers spend a lot of time thinking about what to pack in their suitcase but very little thought goes into what they actually wear during the flight itself. That might be a bigger mistake than you realize, because the clothes you choose can make a real difference to your health and comfort up in the air. Cher Dallas, a flight attendant and popular TikToker who has been sharing insider knowledge about the airline industry for years, recently revealed exactly which clothing items she personally refuses to wear on a plane. Her reasons are enough to make you rethink your entire travel wardrobe.

At the very top of her list is the jumpsuit, which she described as a firm “double no.” Her reasoning comes down to what happens every time you use the airplane bathroom. When you have to pull a one-piece garment down, it inevitably touches the floor, and according to Cher, that floor is regularly soaked in urine and is not cleaned anywhere near as often as passengers might hope. It is one of those things you cannot unsee once someone points it out, and it makes a very convincing case for sticking to separates when you travel.

Shorts made her list for similarly stomach-turning reasons. Cher pointed out that diapers get changed directly on airplane seats with surprising frequency, and that is before you factor in the fact that people sometimes get sick on those same seats. The fabric of your shorts comes into direct contact with all of that every time you sit down, which is not a pleasant thought on any flight. Airplane seats simply do not get the deep cleaning they probably need between every single flight.

When it comes to footwear, open-toed shoes and sandals are also a firm no for this flight attendant. The carpet on an airplane is, in her words, horrifyingly dirty. Pets walk on it, people vomit on it, and passengers frequently rub their bare feet across it without a second thought. Cher made it clear she would not want her toes anywhere near that level of exposure, and it is hard to argue with her logic once you picture what that carpet goes through on a busy travel day.

So what should you actually wear instead? Clothing experts from Marks and Spencer recommend choosing soft, roomy, breathable fabrics that you can layer up or down depending on the cabin temperature. Stretchy materials are a great choice because they allow you to move freely without feeling restricted during a long flight. A simple combination of leggings and a short-sleeved top with a comfortable overshirt or light sweater works really well, keeping you warm if the air conditioning is aggressive while still being easy to manage when you land somewhere warm.
