A Wildlife Photographer’s Trembling Hands Led to the Rarest Orca Sighting in 15 Years
For most people, a whale-watching trip off the coast of Japan offers an already extraordinary glimpse of the ocean’s giants. For wildlife photographer N. Hayakawa, a routine outing in the waters near Rausu, Hokkaido turned into something far beyond extraordinary. After nearly 15 years of photographing orcas in the same region, Hayakawa spotted something that stopped them cold: a completely white male orca gliding through the waves alongside a pod of typically pigmented whales. The sight was so unexpected that Hayakawa’s body reacted before their mind could catch up.
“My legs were shaking as I photographed the white orcas I met for the first time,” Hayakawa later wrote on Instagram. The photographer scrambled to steady their camera and capture the moment, knowing full well how quickly an opportunity like this could vanish beneath the surface. When they finally reviewed the images, the reality of what they had witnessed began to sink in. “It looks like a golden-ish cream-colored orca synthesized into a blue sea,” Hayakawa wrote. “I still think it was a dream.” It was not a dream. The cream-colored whale was very much real, swimming serenely among its companions as if nothing about the situation were unusual at all.
“This is the first time I’ve encountered a white orca after 15 years of photographing orcas in Rausu (Hokkaido, Japan),” Hayakawa shared on X, formerly Twitter. The rarity of the sighting prompted immediate questions about what had caused the animal’s striking appearance. While an all-white whale might initially suggest albinism, a closer look at the photographs offered a different explanation. The orca’s eyes appeared black rather than pale, pink, or red, which are the telltale signs of true albinism. That detail led Hayakawa to suspect the animal was instead affected by leucism, a separate and equally fascinating condition.
Leucism involves a partial loss of pigmentation rather than the complete absence of melanin seen in albinism. According to Treehugger, “while albinism refers to the complete lack of melanin, leucism involves a partial loss of pigmentation,” and animals with leucism often retain normal, darker eye coloration while displaying white or patchy features across their bodies. Both conditions can carry real risks in the wild, as affected animals tend to stand out more visibly against their natural surroundings, potentially drawing the attention of predators. In the case of these orcas, however, their pod appeared to have accepted and integrated them fully, offering them the same protection extended to any other member of the group.
Hayakawa returned to the same stretch of ocean in the following days, still processing the encounter. What happened next was, if anything, even more astonishing. A second white orca surfaced, this time a female. The photographer documented her with the same urgency, and again noticed that her eyes were dark, reinforcing the leucism theory for both whales. The presence of two white orcas in the same pod raised compelling questions about a possible genetic connection between them, though researchers would need further study to confirm any shared lineage. Hayakawa, who had identified one as male and the other as female, expressed hope that the pod might one day welcome a white calf born to the pair.
The images went on to captivate animal lovers and marine biologists alike when Hayakawa shared them across social media. Wildlife photographer Noriyuki Hayakawa also confirmed to fact-checkers that the photos were authentic and had “not been edited in any way,” putting to rest any doubts about the sighting. The footage and photographs serve as a powerful reminder of how much remains hidden beneath the ocean’s surface, waiting to be discovered by those patient and dedicated enough to keep showing up.
Orcas are actually members of the dolphin family rather than true whales, making them the largest dolphins on the planet. The first widely documented white orca, nicknamed “Iceberg,” was photographed off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula back in 2012, and scientists tracked him for years afterward. White orcas have also been spotted off the coast of Southern California, suggesting that leucism may appear in isolated pockets of orca populations across multiple ocean regions.
