Vacationing Couple in Sri Lanka Gets Handed a Tiny Puppy by a Stranger and Their Trip Is Never the Same
Some vacations change your life in ways you never planned for. For Oorjitha and her partner Ryan, that moment arrived without warning on a scooter ride through the streets of Sri Lanka. A local boy stopped them, placed a tiny, one-month-old puppy into their hands, and walked away without another word. The couple sat there, stunned, holding a squirming little life and wondering what on earth had just happened.
The puppy, whom they quickly named Squish, was in rough shape. She was covered in fleas and ticks, and clearly needed immediate attention. Oorjitha and Ryan wasted no time getting her to a local vet, who examined Squish and sent them home with deworming medication to help her recover. Back at their hotel, the couple gave her a long-overdue bath and began the process of nursing the tiny pup back to health. It was hardly the breezy vacation itinerary they had planned, but neither of them seemed to mind.
“Nothing like this has ever happened to us, but we knew that we could not put the puppy back out on the street,” Oorjitha said. The decision felt immediate and instinctive. As the days passed, Squish began to open up, her appetite picking up and her personality coming through in full force. She played with toys, acted silly, and charmed her accidental caretakers with every little thing she did. Oorjitha and Ryan began bringing her along with them as they continued their trip, tucking her into their adventures as though she had always been part of the plan.
The joy of having Squish around was real, but so was the reality waiting at the end of the trip. Oorjitha and Ryan lived in Dubai, and bringing a street puppy home across international borders was not a straightforward possibility. “We knew we had to try and find a home for little Squish,” Oorjitha said. She began researching rescue organizations in Sri Lanka and came across Lokku’s Dogs and Cats Care Foundation. Time was tight, as she reached out to the foundation just before she and Ryan were due to fly home. Against the odds, the rescue came through, connecting Squish with a family willing to foster her while a permanent home was found.
What happened next was the kind of ending that feels almost too good to be true but turns out to be completely real. Squish’s foster family fell completely in love with her and made the decision to adopt her permanently. The little dog who had been handed to two strangers on a scooter in the middle of a Sri Lankan street ended up with a devoted family she could call her own. Oorjitha and Ryan were able to board their flight home knowing that Squish was safe, loved, and exactly where she belonged.
Sri Lanka has a significant stray dog population, estimated at around three million, with animal welfare organizations working across the island to manage adoptions and community care programs. The island nation is also home to several native dog breeds, including the Sinhala Hound, one of the oldest and rarest breeds in the world. Dogs have been documented traveling with human populations throughout Asia for over 15,000 years, which makes it fitting that one tiny pup in Sri Lanka found her forever home because two tourists happened to be riding by at exactly the right moment.
