A Dog Owner’s $650 Vet Bill Turned Into the Most Unexpected Diagnosis

When Jennifer Navratil from Austin, Texas, took her two-year-old golden retriever Arlo out for a walk, she had no idea the evening would end in a panic-stricken rush to the emergency vet. Everything seemed normal until Arlo returned home and started acting strangely, at first freezing up in place before things quickly took a more alarming turn. Her back legs began giving out, she was trembling, attempting to vomit, and losing control of her bladder. For any pet owner, watching a beloved dog go through something like that is nothing short of terrifying.

Jennifer and her family immediately feared the worst, suspecting a seizure or some kind of neurological condition. They were smart enough to film Arlo’s symptoms on the spot so the vet could see exactly what was happening. After several hours of waiting and a full examination including a urine analysis, the vet came back with a conclusion that left the family completely stunned. Arlo had ingested a significant amount of marijuana during her walk.

While the diagnosis was a shock, it was also an enormous relief compared to what the family had imagined. Arlo recovered quickly, and by the very next morning she was back to her energetic, tail-wagging self as if nothing had happened. Jennifer later recalled that there had been a concert nearby the previous evening, which likely explained how Arlo came across the substance on the ground during the walk. The total bill for the emergency vet visit came to $650.

Jennifer shared the story on TikTok, and the video took off in a big way, racking up more than 10.7 million views. The comment section flooded with fellow dog owners sharing similar experiences and warning others that dogs are extremely sensitive to THC. Veterinary experts consistently point out that cannabis toxicity in dogs is more common than most people realize, particularly in areas where recreational marijuana is legal or at large public events where people tend to consume it outdoors.

For dog owners, the situation is a real reminder of how curious and indiscriminate dogs can be when sniffing around on the ground during a walk. Something that seems harmless to a human can have a dramatic effect on a dog’s much smaller body and different metabolism. Knowing the signs of marijuana ingestion in dogs, which include stumbling, disorientation, trembling, and urinary incontinence, can help owners act fast and get the right help without wasting precious time on worry. The good news is that with proper veterinary care, most dogs recover fully and fairly quickly.
