Malaysian Engineer Sets New World Record With Forty-Two Teeth

Human anatomy generally follows a predictable pattern, especially when it comes to dental health. Most adults expect to have a set of thirty-two teeth once they reach maturity. However, a thirty-three-year-old man from Malaysia has completely redefined these expectations by entering the record books.

Prathab Muniandy, an engineer working in the oil and gas sector, has been officially recognized for his unique biological trait. He currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most teeth in a human male. His total count reached a staggering forty-two, which is ten more than the average person possesses.

The discovery of this unusual condition did not happen in a dentist’s chair during a medical emergency. Instead, the realization occurred quite casually during a family gathering in 2021. While enjoying tea with his relatives, Prathab mentioned that he felt as though extra teeth were continuing to grow in his mouth.

His family was intrigued by the claim and decided to perform a manual count right then and there. To their absolute shock, they counted thirty-eight teeth already visible in his mouth. This prompted Prathab to seek professional medical advice to understand the extent of his dental development.

A subsequent visit to the dentist included a series of detailed X-rays to look beneath the surface of his gums. The imaging revealed that there were four additional teeth waiting to erupt. By the beginning of 2023, these extra teeth had fully emerged, bringing his total count to forty-two.

In the medical world, this condition is known as hyperdontia. It is characterized by the presence of supernumerary teeth that develop in addition to the standard set. While many people might have one or two extra teeth, having ten additional ones is an extremely rare occurrence.

The process of making the record official required careful verification by dental experts. Dr. Shovannia and Dr. Arivinthaan were the professionals who examined Prathab to confirm the final count for Guinness World Records. The title was officially verified and awarded on December 28, 2023, in Klang, Selangor.

Despite the high number of teeth, Prathab has reported very few issues with his oral health. Often, hyperdontia leads to severe crowding, pain, or the need for multiple extractions to save the jaw structure. In this specific case, the extra teeth grew in remarkably straight and did not cause any physical discomfort.

Prathab has noted that most people do not even notice his record-breaking smile during normal conversation. He typically has to point out the extra teeth before anyone realizes that his mouth is different from others. Once he reveals the fact, people are usually stunned and find the situation difficult to believe at first.

Maintaining such a large number of teeth requires a very disciplined approach to daily hygiene. Prathab is careful to brush his teeth at least twice every day and uses dental floss regularly. He acknowledges that his dentists have gone the extra mile to help him keep his unique smile in top condition.

The engineer expressed that holding a world record is a deeply special and amazing feeling. What started as a casual observation during a family tea time has turned into a global achievement. He is proud to represent his country in such a unique and unexpected category of human biology.

For comparison, the female record for the most teeth is currently held by Kalpana Balan from India. She possesses thirty-eight teeth, which is four fewer than Prathab’s verified total. Both of these cases highlight the incredible and sometimes baffling variations found within the human body.

Scientific communities often look at these cases to better understand the genetic factors behind dental growth. Prathab’s ability to house forty-two teeth without significant pain or misalignment is a subject of great interest. It proves that biological anomalies do not always result in medical complications.

As a father and a professional, Prathab continues to live his life normally despite his viral fame. He has shared his story through various platforms, including a TikTok video that garnered hundreds of thousands of views. His journey serves as a reminder that uniqueness can be found in the most unexpected places.

We would love to hear what you think about this incredible biological record and if you have ever heard of someone with similar dental traits in the comments.
