A fresh study from Irish travel insurance provider JustCover has crowned Lisbon as the most colourful city on the planet. Researchers examined daytime photos from 78 vibrant destinations around the globe and detected more than 2.6 million unique colours in images of the Portuguese capital. This impressive total earned Lisbon a perfect vibrancy score of 100 out of 100. The analysis focused on natural urban palettes without heavy filters making the results feel authentic for anyone who loves capturing travel moments.
Lisbon charms visitors with its pastel coloured buildings that line the hillsides and the famous patterned azulejo tiles decorating walls in historic districts like Alfama. Bright yellow trams rattle along the steep narrow streets adding pops of sunshine to every view. These elements blend with the warm sunlight and blue skies to create a living canvas that photographers and social media enthusiasts adore. No wonder the city topped the list when colour diversity was measured across so many global spots.
Right behind in second place comes Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Its skyline mixes sleek modern towers with ornate temples and shrines creating bold contrasts. With more than 2.4 million colours identified Porto earned a score of 91.6 proving the country dominates when it comes to eye catching urban beauty.
Cartagena in Colombia landed fourth thanks to its rainbow hued buildings and flower filled balconies. The striking yellow clock tower at the entrance to the old town serves as a cheerful landmark. Fifth place went to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil where over 2.3 million colours popped from its landscapes and the iconic Selarón Steps tiled in yellow blue and green. These Latin American gems highlight how architecture and nature team up to deliver serious visual impact.
Other notable entries in the top 15 include Guanajuato Havana New Orleans Antigua and New York from the Americas. Their bustling streets neon signs and lively facades keep the energy high. On the European side Dubrovnik and Barcelona join Lisbon and Porto in celebrating bold palettes that make wandering the streets feel like stepping into a painting.
The study selected representative photos and used a specialised tool to count distinct shades revealing which places naturally burst with the most variety.
