2018 Update: due to a shipping issue with a few of my readers, I have switched my dogs to Natural Pet Organics CBD oil.

5 Ways CBD Oil Helps Keep My Dogs Healthy

What is CBD?

CBD or Cannabidiol is one of the compounds of hemp and strains of cannabis that are bred to be high CBD.  CBD is non-psychoactive and serves as a natural supplement added to food or taken directly to treat anxiety, pain, and other health issues in humans and dogs.

  1. Allergies
  2. Anxiety, Phobias (Fireworks, Thunderstorms), New Situations
  3. Gut Issues
  4. Inflammation, Mobility Issues, Pain Relief
  5. Veterinarian Visits

CBD Oil Treats Anxiety, Phobias, and Stress

I have three dogs that have various levels of reactivity.  Because we live on 5 acres surrounded by trails and wooded areas, I don’t often take them off of the property unless I’m meeting a friend or my dogs have a vet appointment.  There are too many people who don't ask before charging towards you with their dogs – My Dog is Friendly!!!! – I find it safer to stay at home.

The downside to this plan is that my dogs will never earn their Good Citizenship Certification.  They’re not very socialized and going into a new situation can be stressful.  This is one of the many reasons why I like to have CBD oil on hand.

When the dogs are going to be faced with a situation that increases their anxiety, I give the appropriate dosage (discussed below) to my dogs 30 to 60 minutes prior to an event (going to the vet, going on a walk, guests coming over, or road work beginning) and it helps them get through the event with a less stress.

CBD Oil Treats Health Conditions

I also use CBD oil as a tool in my arsenal to treat digestive issues, inflammation, mobility problems, pain, and allergies.  I hate that helpless feeling of knowing my dog isn’t feeling well, but luckily I can do something about it.  Whenever one of my dogs isn’t feeling great, a dose of CBD oil goes a long way in providing pain relief, easing discomfort, and helping them get a good night’s rest.

Where to Buy CBD Oil for Dogs

I have several sources for CBD oil for my dogs:

Although marijuana is legal in Washington, I’m not comfortable buying CBD products at local shops.  I prefer to buy products that are formulated for dogs – just in case.

My Local Pet Store

I only buy from my local pet store when I’m in a bind, and I need the oil RIGHT NOW.  This usually happens when Sydney is having pain and mobility issues that can’t wait a couple of days to receive a shipment. I usually try to keep CBD oil on hand, however, I recently ran out and didn’t restock, and I paid a hefty price for that mistake.  The CBD oil at my local pet store is $100.  The one I usually purchase (and works great) is less.

Through the Raw Food Co-op

This is a great option because we get a discount on the CBD oil. However, I have to wait until the order opens to make a purchase.  I may be able to order it next week or two months out.

Natural Pet Organics

What I love about ordering from Natural Pet Organics is that I can get my order quickly because it's sold through

The reason I prefer Natural Pet Organics CBD oil is because…

  • this is a full entourage CBD extract, which means they use all of the CBD found in the plant, making their products more powerful
  • The ingredients are all natural, sustainably grown and non-GMO
  • the CBD oil is lab tested and verified
  • CBD oil is non-psychoactive (this isn’t’ THC)
  • All of their products are safety sealed

Which is Better for Dogs, CBD Oil or CBD Treats?

CBD oil laced treats are all the rage, and there are a lot of people who claim that they work.  I don’t know if they do or don’t.  I end up giving my dogs several of these treats, and I’m still not 100% sure if they’re working.  I’m raising two dogs with anxiety and one dog with joint issues – I don’t have time for treats that may or may not work.  Plus, my girl with mobility issues is also on a diet, she doesn’t need any more treats.

This is why I prefer CBD oil to CBD dog treats.

CBD oil goes directly to the source of the issue and quietly calms my dogs, relieves pain, and improves mobility.  Whatever it is that I need CBD oil to do – it does a good job quickly.  I see an improvement in my dogs within 30-45 minutes because CBD oil is absorbed through the stomach, allowing it to work faster to provide relief in the system.

How Much CBD Oil Can I Give to My Dog?

Most CBD oil products come with serving suggestions on the bottle.  The brand that I use recommends “1-2 drops per every 10 pounds of body weight.”  With my dogs, this is nearly a full dropper, and I either put it on a small piece of bread, in their meal, or on a small dog treat.  Only Rodrigo will take it directly in his mouth.

It’s tempting to double up the dosage if my dog doesn’t show improvement within 30 minutes. However, I've learned to give it some time.  Usually, I’ll see noticeable calmness within 30-45 minutes, and I see improved mobility after regular doses within a day.

CBD oil has been part of my regimen for two years, and one thing I learned is to look for CBD oil that is 250-300 mg; anything 200 mg and below ends up being more expensive because it takes more to work with my dogs, who weigh between 60 to 75 pounds.

Will CBD Oil Make My Dog High?

No, CBD oil is non-psychoactive and doesn’t’ contain THC.  The ingredients include:

  • Sustainably Grown CBD Oil Extract
  • Virgin Organic Hemp Seed Oil
  • Organic Vitamin E Oil
  • Cod Liver Oil
  • Astaxanthin (this is the terpenes mentioned above, and a powerful anti-oxidant).

Warning About Buying CBD Oil Products for Your Dog

The pet industry is a booming business because brands know that we love our dogs and will do anything for them.  That being the case, each year that I attend SuperZoo, I see a new brand trying to capitalize off of a 60 billion dollar industry while tugging at our heartstrings.  One year, a celebrity was promoting a shampoo that was full of unhealthy chemicals.  Another year a hemp company was selling hemp treats and not actively explaining that they didn’t contain CBD (it wasn't legal for the Canadian company to ship CBD treats and supplements to the US), which is the ingredient that my dogs need for pain or anxiety relief.

Before buying a CBD oil product, do your homework and ask for recommendations.  I will always recommend Natural Pet Organics products, and as I find new ones that work for my dogs, I’ll recommend them as well.

For the money, I find that Natural Pet Organics CBD oil is the best deal at less than $40 per bottle.  One bottle will last me a few months with four dogs because I don’t use it daily; instead, I use it in a regimen with Ewegurt.
