Perfect Toy for Active Dogs and Limited Time - COLLAR Puller Dog Training Toy
Source: COLLAR Puller USA, used with permission

We were introduced to COLLAR Puller rings for dogs several years ago and they are still one of our favorite toys for the dogs all of these years later.  A Puller ring is a purple, toss toy that is circular and is used to play fetch with our dogs.  We ordered our first set on Amazon.com in 2014 and have since ordered many more sets as rings have worn out or been lost (we live on 5 acres).  It didn't take J and I long to dub The Puller the best dog toss and fetch toy.

Why Pull Rings are THE BEST!

No plastic odor – It doesn't have a chemically smell that would make me worried about our dogs catching or chewing on it.

Stands up to chewing (mostly) – After a couple weeks of use, it has bite marks all over it and it's hard to imagine that it ever had a smooth surface – but our dogs have laid with it for a chew session and there are zero chunks missing. However, if you have a dog that can destroy one of those black Kongs, then they can destroy a Pull ring. Rodrigo isn't allowed to chew on it because he can take one apart – it takes him a while, but he can do it.

Shortens play sessions – 20-30 minutes is all it takes to wear the dogs out and on these shorter fall/winter days, that's heaven.  We have a big pack and most of them are active and need daily exercise. A Puller ring helps us work out their energy before we all head in for the evening.

The dogs love it – we have Puller rings all over our property and when we go outside, our dogs are immediately searching for the toy.  Even Sydney, who isn't known for being playful, is bouncing around and barking happily when she sees the purple ring.

It's affordable – at less than $25 for 2 rings, it's one of the most affordable toys in our home.  I no longer spend more than a couple bucks on toys, because I know that they won't last.  What's funny is that I can find a $3 dog toy that will last forever, but if I spend $10 or more, it'll be toast in 10 minutes (with a few exceptions).

Alternatives to COLLAR Puller Rings

There are a few toss and fetch dog toys that look similar to The Puller and one is significantly cheaper.  I was going to order it, because I was curious about the difference, but upon reading the reviews, I decided to spend my money on another Puller set.

JW Pet Company's Invincible Chains – you can order several and connect them together if you'd like, maybe to keep them from getting lost after you play with them; I'm not sure.  The price online for a large dog toy ranges from $6.44 – $10.39 for each ring (less than the Puller rings).  But the reviews say…

Customer reviews of the Invincible Chains

“Not long lasting or invincible – We purchased one of these yesterday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m. By 9:00, it was completely destroyed. This does not match my definition of “tough” and “long-lasting”–as advertised on the packaging. Very disappointed in this product.” ~ Melanie

“Very poor – Someone else gave this 5 stars for how sturdy it was and this person also had a stronger dog. I am returning all 5 I bought because I gave one to my bull terrier and it broke in a few minutes of play. He wasn't even pulling on it! I haven't seen anything this bad in a while.” ~ Hanus

Although there were several 5 star reviews, the 1-2 star reviews were all along the line of this product not being invincible and only lasting a few hours.  Given how rough our dogs are when they play (they also play tug with the rings too), I knew that this the Invincible Chains didn't compare to the COLLAR Puller rings.

JW Pet Company's Big Mouth Ring – this one is a single toy, similar to the Puller rings, that can also be connected as rings if you buy several.  The price online for a large dog toy ranges from $5.22 – $14.99.

Customer reviews of the Big Mouth Ring

“Gone in 60 seconds – My 1 year old. 45 lb. pit bull chewed through this in less than half an hour and it crumbled into tiny little pieces. Not for a strong chewer. Have had better luck with the JW bear chew toy. Very disappointed.” ~ Malamoi

“Pitbull ate ring, $1,500 in surgery later, he's okay – Fun to play with, but a heavy chewer can tear it apart. Apparently after it breaks, it's pretty tasty because my stupid pitbull decided to swallow it when I wasn't looking. He passed a couple 3/4″ long sections. After a few days of vomiting x-rays revealed a longer piece lodged in his duodenum. Had to be removed surgically. So if it breaks, throw it away immediately.” ~ Tyler

Again, there were lots of better reviews for this toy, but I'm always on the look out for any dog owners who experienced the toy being destroyed, because Rodrigo has a history of chewing toys to pieces and Scout and Zoey have a history of swallowing those pieces.

To be honest, any toy can be destroyed.  But I want to try and avoid toys that are prone to easy destruction when possible.

Four Paws 7-Inch Rough and Rugged Ring Float Toy for Dogs – this one seems promising and is only $10.49.  There was another listing for $21.93 (there aren't enough details to reveal the difference).  There was only one negative review about a small dog who destroyed it the toy in 20 minutes and after reading all the other positive reviews, I'm wondering if that was just a fluke.  A bad toy made it off the assembly line.

In reading the reviews, a common thread is that the Rough and Rugged Rig Float Toy is…

  • great for tough chewers
  • fun for the dogs
  • good quality
  • great for playing fetch in the water

Sounds like this could be a good alternative to the Puller rings.  The only difference is that the Puller rings come in a set of 2 and when playing with our dogs, it's nice to have multiple rings to toss around.

Either way, I'm going to order a few sets of COLLAR Puller rings for our dogs and for friends.  Since we've had nothing but great experiences with this dog toy, I don't see any reason to change now.
