Back to School doesn't mean a lot in our house. I used to pick up my journals and pens at the Back to School sales, but now I buy what I need at Costco and I'm good for years.
For the most part, Back to School reminds me of school clothes shopping and dorm room decor. Nothing more.
Social Media is alive with pictures of kids heading back to school – already? – and it made me wonder if my dogs notice a change. Our schedule doesn't change, but traffic outside our property does pick up as kids head to the local high school and school buses populate the road.
My Dogs Love a Routine
One thing that my dogs and I have in common is that we love routine. I get up around the same time every morning (even weekends), the dogs have their meals at the same time every day, and we play the same times every day. They know the routine.
The closest thing we have to the Back to School change is J's schedule. He now has a different position and works a new schedule that has commenced with the new school year.
Luckily, we can slowly adapt the dogs to our new schedule as it unfolds.
Alleviating Anxiety When a Routine Changes
Starting this morning, each of our dogs received a scoop of Ewegurt in their raw meals. Ewegurt is a freeze-dried food topper made from sheep's milk that has a calming effect on dogs and is perfect for dogs with anxiety. Because of a bad experience with a prescription medication, I prefer to treat my dogs naturally.
Ewegurt is a perfect supplement for dogs that are afraid of thunderstorms, fireworks, are nervous around new situations or people, or have separation anxiety.
I'm positive Ewegurt can help when your human family members go back to school.
Ingredients in Ewegurt Food Topper
Ewegurt offers four recipes that I use interchangeably with our dogs.
- Ewegurt Freeze Dried Treat & Food Topper with Sardines
- Ewegurt Freeze Dried Treat & Food Topper with Emu
- Ewegurt Freeze Dried Treat and Food Topper with Beef Tripe
- Ewegurt Freeze Dried Treat and Food Topper with Beef Heart
The ingredients vary minimally and in the Sardines recipe, you'll see:
“Sheep’s Milk Yogurt ( Sheep’s Milk, Yogurt Culture), Sardines, Kale, Beets, Parsley, Organic Coconut Oil, Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar.” Source: Ewegurt.com
I simply take a scoop or two of Ewegurt and either add it to their raw meals or I mix it (using a wire whisk) into goats milk and the dogs drink it as a treat. I notice our dogs visibly relaxing within 30 minutes. A little goes a long way with my pack.
How I'm Using Ewegurt to Alleviate Anxiety
I mostly use Ewegurt with Zoey and Rodrigo although all of our dogs have enjoyed their “treat” here and there. The following are examples of how I'm using Ewegurt to alleviate my dogs' anxiety.
PACK WALKS OR WALKING IN NEW AREAS – I love walking the dogs with friends. When we get together, my dogs get so excited that it can be stressful for them. Add in the extra stimuli of joggers, cyclists, and other dogs and you can see that a good situation can go badly for my dogs. Adding Ewegurt to their breakfast calms the dogs and helps everyone adapt quickly to the new environment.
VETERINARIAN VISITS – Only Rodrigo loves going to the vet; the rest of our dogs aren't a fan. I tried Rescue Remedy for a long time and the dogs don't like it and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Ewegurt does make a big difference.
WHEN COMPANY IS COMING OVER – We don't do a lot of entertaining, but on the rare occasions people are going to stop by, Ewegurt is a great Pre-Funk for the dogs to help them relax. They'll still be over excited when someone new enters the house, but it won't be 30 minutes of crazy.
THUNDERSTORMS, FIREWORKS, WINDSTORMS – When we have a heads up for noise (this includes roadwork, by the way), I give the dogs Ewegurt in their morning and evening meals to keep the calmness coming. Rodrigo and Zoey are the most impacted by noise and storms, but I give Ewegurt to all four of the dogs because it doesn't harm them and just because my dogs aren't showing visible signs of stress doesn't mean they're not stressed.

Rodrigo and Zoey are anxious, reactive dogs and Ewegurt has worked to alleviate their stress naturally. I no longer worry about leaving my dogs when there is going to be a storm and I look forward to taking them on walks.
